The connection to Acoustics?
I originally dreamed of studying canto at the Conservatory, but my father encouraged me to pursue a technical education first. After narrowly missing admission to the Electronics Faculty, I enrolled in Civil Engineering, planning to switch later—but I never did!
In my fourth year, realizing I had no passion for concrete or steel, I turned to my father for advice. He introduced me to Mircea Grumăzescu, one of Romania’s most renowned acousticians, who asked: “Since you love music so much, why not explore acoustics?” That was the beginning of a 50-year career in a field that became both my profession and my passion.
For my diploma project, I designed a 1000-seat concert hall with a recording studio, inspired by the Radio Hall in Bucharest. While gathering project data, I had an appointment with Anton Alexandru Necșulea, a leading acoustician at Radio Romania. Arriving 10 minutes late, I was met with a firm: “I expected you at 10 sharp!” That moment taught me a lifelong lesson in punctuality.
Upon graduation, my professor Romulus Constantinescu, then Scientific Director at INCERC, saw my diploma project and asked: “Would you like to join the Acoustics Lab at INCERC?” The rest is history.
Later, as the years passed, professional memberships followed:

The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CAER) facilitated not only economic exchanges but also technical collaborations between socialist countries. Within acoustics, the INCERC Laboratory held a leading position, serving as a Coordination Center due to its advanced research infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment.
Each year, two technical meetings were held in different capitals, allowing for the exchange of research findings between member states. Unfortunately, with CAER's dissolution in 1990, we also decided to disband the Coordination Center—a decision that, in retrospect, may not have been the most advantageous.

Beyond my scientific research, my greatest joy has been working with extraordinary professionals in acoustics and music, including: Prof. Dr. Eng. Virgil Focșa (Former Dean, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Iași), Dr. Arch. Romeo Belea (Lead architect, National Theatre of Bucharest renovation), Maestro Ion Caramitru (Director, National Theatre of Bucharest), Conductor Radu Popa (Craiova Philharmonic), Pianist Mihai Ungureanu (Former Director, Craiova Philharmonic), Wolfgang Ahnert (Renowned German acoustician), Jerzy Sadowski (Polish acoustician, former head of the Acoustics Lab at Warsaw Construction Research Institute)
A Regret and a Hope
I wish I had been able to train more successors in acoustics, but for various reasons, I only have three:Gabriel Golumbeanu, Dan Corjos, and Ioana Alexe.
I also wish that today’s young professionals could experience the same sense of family and purpose that we had in our early years at INCERC.
Yet, despite all this, as André Maurois wrote at the end of Climate: "Our destinies and our wills rarely align in perfect timing" … I choose to see old age as a natural stage of life because, as an American poet of the past century wrote (Martin Buxbaum) "Some people, no matter how old they get, never lose their beauty; they simply move it from their faces to their hearts."
