To build on Earth, we must first understand the laws of nature. These can be expressed into a few fundamental sciences: physics, chemistry, and biology. However, they must be studied through their effects on the built environment.
Water infiltration, mold in walls, stuffy spaces or rooms where you constantly feel a draft, cold interiors, noisy environments or spaces where, for inexplicable reasons, you just don’t feel comfortable and feel like leaving them rapidly; they are human pathologies caused by design, construction, or operational defects in buildings.
I often say that, like any piece of equipment, buildings should come with a "user manual" (and, in fact, they do—but does anyone read it?!), including "operational instructions." Which of us knows that windows are meant to be opened?! I can understand that the traumas of the 1980s—when we endured freezing indoor temperatures, power outages, and low gas pressure during the day (with normal pressure only around… 3 AM)—have led to a collective behavioral shift. We have stopped opening windows, fearing that heat will escape. However, nothing could be farther from the truth: opening a window means "washing" the indoor air, removing pollutants and toxins.
This is, obviously, only an example. The course aims to be an introduction, followed by an advanced course in Building Acoustics, as well as an in-depth exploration of hygrothermal performance, ventilation, and natural lighting.
This course is not exclusively aiming at architects but it is conceived for all who partner in the act of creating a building, from designers, contractors, system manufacturers, students of the technical faculties and, in general, for anyone who is curious to learn more.
The action of natural and anthropogenic environmental agents and how they intervene in design, from concept to detail:
